HAVE A PICNIC
– practical life –
A picnic is not only a fun experience to have with your family, it can also be very educational. The work that goes into a picnic incorporates many Montessori related skills. Have your child prepare the food. They can wash and cut the fruits and vegetables, and transfer them to bowls. They can make the sandwiches. Have the children be in charge pouring the drinks and laying out the picnic blanket.
Use this as an opportunity to talk about/focus on courtesy and manners, and the importance of saying please and thank you.
– care of environment –
It is vital to teach children to care for our environment. Gardening fosters a love and appreciation for nature, as well as develops the atheistic sense. Children can help plant, water, weed, and pick the fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Gardening is a wonderful way for children to connect with nature and nurture living things. It provides learning opportunities when studying parts of seeds, flowers and plants. Children love to dig in the dirt and get great exercise while doing so.If you don’t have the room for a large garden, a small flower bed or herb garden will do the trick. It is amazing to see a seed become a plant.
Use gardening tools that are real, not plastic toys, and the right size for the height of the child.
– nature art –
This is a simple painting art project involving seashells, watercolor or finger paints, and a paintbrush. Toddlers can work on holding the paint brush in his one hand and steadying the seashell in the other hand. After the seashells are painted, children can enjoy washing them clean in a bucket of soapy water. This Montessori practical life activity encourages the development of fine motor muscles with the fun sensation of using soapy water and a dish brush for scrubbing. It also re-enforces the concept of cleaning up.
- Ride bikes
- Fly kites
- Find a scenic location to feed ducks or other birds.
- Play outside with water using a sprinkler, hose, slip and slide, small pool, or water balloons.

- Hang out at the park. Look for walking trails and local playgrounds where your kids can explore and have fun.
- Take the whole family fishing.
- Spend the day at the lake, local swimming pool or the beach.
